Dark Spiral: a manga horror atmosphere that sticks with you

Dark Spiral doesn’t look like anything else in the Hacksaw Gaming catalogue. No bright colours. No cheeky mascot trying to soften the mood. Instead, the game throws you straight into psychological body horror, heavily inspired by the work of Junji Ito, the Japanese manga author behind Uzumaki and a true master of cosmic horror.

Spirals everywhere. Distorted bodies. Faces melting into frozen reflections. The whole visual direction feels deliberately unsettling — the kind of design that creeps under your skin whilst the reels keep spinning.

The official lore sets the tone straight away. In an old art room, a group of schoolgirls lifts the cloth that had been covering the mirrors. Skin begins to melt. Eyes start spinning in wet circles. Their reflections keep smiling whilst they’re screaming inside.

Hacksaw Gaming built the entire aesthetic of the game around that idea. The palette is almost entirely black and white, with coloured symbols cutting through the grey background like open wounds. A radical visual direction for a studio usually associated with bright, playful designs.

The sound design follows the same path. No jingles. No catchy casino melodies. Just a soundtrack that feels far closer to a horror film OST than a traditional slot environment.

How the Summoning Symbol works in Dark Spiral

The Summoning Symbol is the core mechanic of Dark Spiral. It can land on reels 2 to 5 and instantly reveals a stack of identical symbols or Wilds, dramatically increasing the number of possible winning ways each time it appears.

This is the feature responsible for expanding the grid from 4,096 up to 331,776 ways to win during a spin.

Summoning Symbol: a special expanding symbol that, when it lands, reveals a vertical stack of identical paying symbols or Wilds. It cannot appear on reel 1.

The size of the Summoning Symbol determines how many symbols are revealed:

SizeSymbols Revealed
1×23, 4, 5 ou 6 symbols
1×35, 6, 7, 8 ou 9 symbols
1×46, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 ou 12 symbols

Interaction with Wilds and Cascades

If a Wild lands directly above or below a Summoning Symbol on the same reel, the Summoning Symbol absorbs the Wild and increases in size. That upgrade expands the number of symbols revealed during the next activation.

Wild: a red circular symbol that substitutes for all paying symbols. It pays 5.00× the stake for 6 of a kind and can land on any reel.

The cascade mechanic works as follows: after every winning combination, the winning symbols disappear and new ones drop into place.

If a Summoning Symbol is part of a win, it stays on the grid and reveals a new symbol, allowing another cascade to trigger. This continues until no further wins occur. Only then does the grid fully clear for the next spin.

The 3 Free Spins Modes: Shattered, Twisted, Tortured

Dark Spiral features three tiers of free spins, triggered depending on how many Scatter symbols land. Each level ramps up the intensity and introduces different mechanics.

No competitor really explains the differences clearly. Here they are.

ModeTriggerSpinsKey Mechanic cléRetrigger
Shattered3 Scatter10 FSHigher Summoning Symbol frequency2 FS = +2 / 3+ FS = +4
Twisted4 Scatter10 FSAll symbols can transform2 FS = +2 / 3+ FS = +4
Tortured (Hidden Epic)5 Scatter10 FSTwisted mechanic enhanced2 FS = +2 / 3+ FS = +4

Shattered is the entry-level mode. Summoning Symbols land more frequently than in the base game, but they don’t persist between spins.

Twisted changes the dynamic completely. Summoning Symbols stick to the grid for the entire duration of the bonus and reveal a new symbol after every winning spin. This is the mode where long cascade chains start to become realistic.

Tortured builds on the Twisted mechanics but starts with two Summoning Symbols already locked on the grid from spin one. The strongest possible opening. It’s also the rarest bonus to trigger naturally.

Feature Buy: 4 options, which one should you pick?

Dark Spiral offers four different bonus buy options, each with slightly different RTP values depending on the mode — a level of transparency that’s fairly rare from Hacksaw Gaming. All buy options come with an RTP higher than the base game.

Our take after thousands of spins

The 3× BonusHunt is the only option that stays reasonable for a normal session. It multiplies the chances of triggering a bonus by five without committing 100× the stake, which is why it’s the one we used the most during our test.

The Summon at 100× is interesting if you want to experience the Summoning mechanics directly in the base game without having to rely on a bonus trigger.

The Twisted at 200× is the most ambitious option. It’s the only one capable of unlocking Tortured. Clearly aimed at big-hit hunters with the bankroll to back it.

We ran 8,500 spins on Dark Spiral, betting between €0.10 and €0.20. Starting bankroll was €1,000, and we finished the session at €951.

Losing €49 on a session of that size, especially on a slot with very high volatility, isn’t something we’re going to complain about.

What’s more interesting is the distribution of bonuses. We triggered Shattered 55 times and Twisted 12 times. Tortured? Zero. Not a single one in 8,500 spins.

The best hit of the session came in a Twisted bonus, landing 2,765× the stake with three Summoning Symbols active on the grid at the same time.

When all three columns fire in parallel and the cascades start chaining together, you quickly understand why this mode sits at the very core of the game. It doesn’t happen often, but when it does, the grid turns into something else entirely.

The most memorable frustration of the session — and one that perfectly represents how the game behaves — came during a Shattered bonus. A Summoning Symbol landed on reels 3 and 4, but nothing appeared on reel 2. Result: the combination doesn’t connect and the potential evaporates instantly. Dark Spiral can be cruel like that. The Invocations are there, but they miss their target by a single reel.

Without BonusHunt active, we went through stretches of up to 320 consecutive spins without a single bonus trigger. It’s brutal.

One last point, and it matters: the bonus animations are slow. Very slow. Turn on turbo or super turbo the moment you enter free spins. Otherwise a Twisted bonus can drag on for several minutes, sometimes for a pretty underwhelming result.

RTP, volatility and bankroll management

Dark Spiral runs on a base RTP of 96.22%, calculated across 10 billion simulated spins — a solid figure sitting in the upper average of the market.

The volatility is extremely high, and you can see it immediately in the paytable structure. The royal symbols (10, J, Q, K, A) only pay 0.50× the stake for six of a kind. Intentionally low.

The game distributes its value through Summoning mechanics and cascading chains, not through traditional line hits.

Hit Frequency: the base game shows a 25.2% hit rate, meaning roughly 1 spin in 4 produces a win. Not particularly frequent — and even less generous in terms of average payout. Expect to sit through genuine dry spells before feeding into a bonus.

For bankroll management on Dark Spiral, forget short sessions. In our test, dry stretches without BonusHunt active reached up to 320 spins. At €0.20 per spin, that’s €64 gone without seeing a single bonus.

A reasonable minimum? 150× your stake per session, at the very least.

If you activate the BonusHunt FeatureSpins at 3×, every spin costs triple. Lower your base stake before turning it on, otherwise your bankroll will melt away twice as fast as expected.

Also remember to switch it off manually when you want a break — it stays active until you disable it yourself.

If you enjoy Dark Spiral, you’ll probably like these as well…

Dark Spiral sits in a very specific niche: visceral horror, high variance, and an evolving grid mechanic. Here are three slots that share at least part of that DNA.

Wildwood Curse (Hacksaw Gaming): same dark universe, same cold colour palette, but the base game breathes a bit more. Bonuses land quicker and the dry spells aren’t quite as punishing. A solid warm-up before jumping into Dark Spiral if you’re not yet used to the extreme volatility typical of Hacksaw’s catalogue.

SixSixSix (Hacksaw Gaming): if Dark Spiral felt manageable, SixSixSix will remind you that Hacksaw can push the pain even further. Even higher volatility, openly satanic aesthetics, and bonuses that show up even less often. Built for players who are genuinely prepared to suffer through long stretches before something big lands.

Mental (Nolimit City) — technically, Dark Spiral’s Summoning Symbols draw direct inspiration from Nolimit City’s xWays mechanic. Mental is Nolimit’s take on that concept: an explosive grid, destructive cascades, and extreme variance. If the expanding mechanics in Dark Spiral are what hooked you, Mental is the logical next step.

Verdict: is Dark Spiral worth it?

Dark Spiral is a slot that splits opinion, and that’s probably intentional. The universe holds together from start to finish: the lore, the visuals, the sound design — everything feels consistent and fully committed.

The Summoning Symbol mechanic adds genuine depth, particularly in Twisted mode. Tortured, which we never managed to trigger across 8,500 spins, remains the elusive grail that keeps pulling you back.

The downside? The base game can be brutal. Stretches of 200 to 350 spins without a bonus absolutely happen and aren’t rare. The animations are slow — turbo isn’t optional, it’s essential. And players on smaller budgets may never even see a proper bonus.

That said, across 8,500 spins with a €1,000 bankroll, we finished –€49 with a best hit of 2,765×, which lines up well with the slot’s mathematical profile.

This is a slot built for patient players with a solid bankroll, ideally running BonusHunt active. Not designed for quick sessions… unless you’re spinning in turbo mode.
